A Career at CBSbutler: Employee Insights from Tom McParland, Defence Team Leader

August 28, 2024

Tom, can you start by telling us a bit about your background and what led you to CBSbutler?

Sure, I used to work at a college in Guildford as a one-to-one assistant for a disabled student. I did that for a year just after finishing college. My sister mentioned that recruitment could be a good career choice, so I started applying for recruitment jobs in the local area. One of them was CBSbutler. I spoke to Rob that evening, went through a two- or three-stage interview process, and got the job.

What was your first role at CBSbutler, and how has your career progressed since then?

I started as a trainee consultant in the IT defence team under Phil Johnson in April 2014. By 2015, I became an associate recruiter and began building my own desk within the defence market. I moved up to recruitment consultant in April 2016, senior recruitment consultant in June 2017, lead consultant in June 2018, and divisional manager in defence in April. I've always been involved in the defence sector, and recently I've been focusing on defence consulting with international corporations, particularly in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and the States.

Would you say there is a clear career path at CBSbutler?

Absolutely. There are clear documents outlining what you need to do to get promoted at each level, including expected earnings and billing targets. It's very achievable if you work hard.

What do you love about being a recruiter at CBSbutler?

The best part is the autonomy. It's like running your own business. The more effort you put in, the more you get out. If I want to change my focus, the company supports my decisions. This level of autonomy is rare in other companies.

How would you describe the company culture at CBSbutler?

We've gone through many changes, including two buyouts. Despite these challenges, we're building our own culture. We have quarterly incentives, monthly team outings, and various competitions to keep things fun and engaging. It's a supportive and dynamic environment.

What about work-life balance at CBSbutler?

CBSbutler is pretty good at supporting the individual needs of employees. I work from home one day a week, which helps balance work and personal life. The company is understanding about appointments and other commitments, treating us like adults.

How does CBSbutler recognise and reward its employees?

Our commission structure is market-leading, up to 30%. We're also bringing back awards and incentives, this includes Christmas parties and quarterly incentives like lunch clubs.

What would you say to someone considering a career in recruitment?

Go for it. Recruitment can be a lucrative career if you're dedicated. Unlike other companies that may quickly let go of underperformers, CBSbutler provides the necessary training and support to help you succeed.
